Pediatric Unit Manager – Richardsbay

The Unit Manager need to provide clinical expertise, leadership and management, which ensures a safe, evidenced based practice environment that supports service requirements in the paediatric service. You will directly coordinate activities for the care of children and young people at the unit level within a model of patient and family centred care.
Principal Accountabilities:
1.Clinical Leadership
  1. Coordinate and monitor the provision of safe, effective nursing practice, using a team model of care delivery, which meets the needs of children, young people and their families
  2. Develop an environment which supports self-accountability and responsibility for effective clinical decision making and patient outcomes
  3. Develops and maintain key partnerships and networks crucial to the success of the role within the organisation and externally
  4. Communicate effectively, and courteously role modelling effective conflict resolution to support a cohesive multidisciplinary team
  5. Incorporates company principles into care delivery
  6. Manage ethical dilemmas in a supportive, collaborative manner
2. Service Management
  1. Develop and agree the annual unit budget and business plan with the management team
  2. Ensure effective coordination and use of all resources in line with approved budgets and meets reporting requirements
  3. Recruits and retain staff appropriately to area, maintaining an appropriate roster and skill mix to enable the delivery of safe care
  4. Manages sick leave, and in conjunction with the Nurse Educator, staff performance
  5. Monitor and review patient acuity, skill mix and workload trends using available data systems to align staffing and workload
3. Professional Development
  1. Undertake annual performance reviews and completes appropriate development goals with all staff Liaises with the Nursing Educator in identification and development of learning needs analysis for the unit and individuals with performance development needs
  2. Liaises with the Nursing Educator to ensure all staff complete orientation, clinical competencies and maintain relevant certification for the specialty
  3. Maintain own clinical knowledge, competence and demonstrates leadership through own professional development
  4. Maintain mandatory certification relevant to role
  5. Committed to and supports demonstration of ongoing staff competency through the Professional Development and Recognition Programme
4. Management of the Environment
  1. Proactively maintain health and safety for clients, staff and others
  2. Promote and ensure infection control standards are maintained
  3. Actively manage clinical risk and incidents and contributes to quality and risk planning and monitoring
5. Continuous Quality Improvement
  1. Lead and encourage continuous quality improvement activities
  2. Identify and support relevant research initiatives
  3. Develop and maintain paediatric standards with relevant audit, ensure accurate data collection processes to meet reporting requirements
KEY REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Registered Nurse with current practising certificate
  2. Relevant post graduate diploma nursing qualification
  3. Significant clinical experience in the care of children and young people
  4. BLS and PALS certification
  5. Previous staff management experience
  6. Computer literacy
